Steps Towards Humanitarian Action
“Steps Towards Humanitarian Action” is a two-stage Erasmus+ training course focused on empowering young people, youth workers, volunteers, and young professionals to take an active role in humanitarian action. Through non-formal and experiential learning, the project explores how young people can contribute to disaster preparedness, emergency response, recovery, and the development of more peaceful and resilient communities.
“Steps Towards Humanitarian Action” is a two-stage Erasmus+ training course designed to explore the role of young people in responding to humanitarian challenges. The project brings together youth workers, young professionals, volunteers, and trainers from European Union and Eastern European and Caucasus regions to examine how young people can contribute to humanitarian action and help communities respond to crises.
The project responds to the growing number and complexity of humanitarian crises caused by armed conflicts, natural disasters, climate change, displacement, and other emergencies. With young people making up a significant proportion of the world's population, the project recognises their potential to become active contributors to humanitarian preparedness, response, recovery, and community resilience.
Through non-formal and experiential learning, participants explore the different stages of humanitarian action, from early preparedness and disaster risk reduction to emergency response, rehabilitation, and recovery. The training encourages participants to analyse humanitarian challenges, identify opportunities for youth involvement, and develop practical approaches for contributing to solutions within their communities.
A central focus of the project is strengthening young people's capacity to take initiative and participate meaningfully in humanitarian action. Participants examine how youth-led ideas, social innovation, creativity, and technology can support communities affected by crises and help develop more peaceful, resilient, and inclusive societies.
The project also encourages participants to challenge negative power dynamics and consider how young people can be involved more strategically in decision-making and humanitarian processes. By sharing experiences and perspectives from different countries and contexts, participants develop a broader understanding of humanitarian challenges and the importance of cooperation and solidarity.
Ultimately, “Steps Towards Humanitarian Action” aims to empower young people and youth workers to move from awareness to action. By providing knowledge, practical tools, and opportunities for international exchange, the project supports participants in becoming active contributors to humanitarian initiatives and positive change in their local communities.
