Waging the War Against Violent Extremism

“Waging the War Against Violent Extremism” is an Erasmus+ training course implemented by the International Alliance for Integration and Sustainability (IAIS), focusing on the prevention of radicalisation and violent extremism through youth work, community engagement, dialogue, and inclusive development.

The project brought together youth workers, youth organisation representatives, educators, facilitators, and community actors from different countries to explore the causes and consequences of radicalisation and violent extremism. Participants examined how social exclusion, discrimination, intolerance, identity-related tensions, and other factors can contribute to radicalisation, while exploring ways to strengthen young people's resilience and create more inclusive communities. A participant account reports that around 40 representatives from 11 countries took part in the training.

Throughout the project, participants explored topics including the causes of extremism and radicalisation, identifying groups vulnerable to radicalisation, citizenship and identity, religious and political beliefs, freedom of expression, online environments, gender equality, gender-based violence, migration, and the challenges faced by refugees and displaced people. The training encouraged participants to look at violent extremism from different perspectives and consider how local communities can contribute to prevention.

The project used non-formal and participatory learning approaches, allowing participants to exchange experiences, analyse real-world challenges, work collaboratively, and develop practical responses that could be applied within their local communities. Particular attention was given to dialogue, tolerance, respect for diversity, human rights, inclusion, and community participation.

As part of the project, participants developed practical materials and activities aimed at raising awareness about preventing and countering violent extremism. These included a social media campaign, a series of awareness-raising memes, a leaflet, and a video designed to encourage discussion and promote prevention within wider society.

The project emphasised that preventing violent extremism requires more than simply responding to extremist activity. It highlighted the importance of inclusive development, tolerance, meaningful participation, human rights, gender equality, dialogue, and reducing the social conditions that can increase vulnerability to radicalisation.

By strengthening the knowledge and practical competences of youth workers and community actors, “Waging the War Against Violent Extremism” aimed to support local organisations in developing preventative initiatives and creating safer, more tolerant, and inclusive communities. The project ultimately promoted the role of youth work and civil society in building resilience against radicalisation while encouraging young people to participate positively in their communities.
